Leonetto Cappiello was an Italian-French painter, caricaturist, and pioneering poster artist, widely recognized as the "father of the modern poster." Born in Livorno, Italy, Cappiello initially pursued a career as a caricaturist, contributing illustrations to satirical magazines such as Le Rire, Le Sourire, and L'Assiette au Beurre in Paris. His bold, expressive style and keen eye for character soon earned him a reputation in the vibrant art circles of Paris. By 1900, he had moved to France permanently, establishing himself as a leading caricaturist of the Belle Époque, capturing the personalities of prominent actors, artists, and politicians.

Cappiello’s shift to poster design around 1902 marked a turning point in his career and in the art of advertising. Posters had been used for decades, but Cappiello brought a revolutionary approach. In an era dominated by intricate, often delicate Art Nouveau designs, Cappiello's posters stood out with their strong, simple shapes, vivid colors, and playful imagery. His compositions were direct and bold, relying on dramatic contrasts and striking imagery to instantly capture the viewer's attention. Unlike traditional advertising art that relied heavily on text and detailed backgrounds, Cappiello focused on creating memorable images that conveyed the essence of a product or brand with immediacy and flair.

One of Cappiello’s most iconic posters, created in 1906 for Maurin Quina, featured a devilish green imp brandishing a glass of liqueur, an image so memorable that it became synonymous with the brand itself. Other notable works include posters for Campari, Pernod Fils, and Bitter Oriental, each imbued with Cappiello’s characteristic humor and theatricality. Over his career, he designed hundreds of posters, blending his Italian roots with a distinctly French aesthetic to create images that were both sophisticated and approachable. Cappiello's posters often featured animals, figures in motion, or exaggerated characters, each designed to evoke an emotional response and create an unforgettable association with the product.
