Thomas Lownds, born 1762 in New York, was one of the father's of Cryptic Rite of Freemasonry (Council). A baker and later grocer by trade, he was awarded many prestigious titles within the Freemasons including deputy grand high priest of New York from 1812-14 and deputy grand master of the Grand Encampment, U.S.A., also being present at its formation. At the time of his death in 1825, he held the distinction of being the first grand master of the grand council.
