Arthur Jones on Sea Fauna

An exceptionally talented master craftsman, woodturner, sculptor, and artist, Arthur Jones  effortlessly blurs the line between art and craft in his creations. In the present work, one of his largest, Arthur Jones set out to elevate the wood vessel from merely a decorative object to an essential element in a larger work incorporating emotion, myth and fantasy:

Sea Fauna was completed over several months beginning in August 1996 through February 1997. The concept originated in December 1995...my objective was to create a vessel and a stand which together form a unified sculpture. In Sea Fauna the stand appears to be part squid, part sea anemone, and part fantasy, posed with its prey, a jellyfish-like creature arched forever in a violent pulsation to escape the deadly embrace.

I am drawn to a line in nature that has many references...the curve of a sail against the horizon, the wing of a soaring gull, the swirl of a mollusk shell, or the curl of a breaking wave.
