conté crayon on paper 9 h × 9½ w in (23 × 24 cm)
Signed to lower right ‘Sheeler’. This work is an original drawing created by Sheeler that was inspired by a larger example made on commission for Mrs. Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, one of the artist's most important patrons. This example, as well as the larger final drawing, depicts a sentimental portrait of Central Park viewed from the American Museum of Natural History, of which Mrs. Rockefeller was particularly fond.
