The Asscher-cut was first patented in 1902 by Joseph Asscher of the Asscher Brothers of Holland’s Asscher Diamond company, which went on to become the Royal Asscher Diamond company. An Asscher-cut diamond is unique and distinctive, with a flat table, large step facets, a high crown, with eight-sides appearing square in shape with cut corners. This cut gained popularity quickly in the 1920s, as the geometric lines of the cut accented Art Deco jewelry. When the Great Depression hit, the Asscher-cut faded from popularity. In the early 2000s, the cut, slightly altered, experienced a resurgence. The original Asscher-cut had 58 facets, but the Royal Asscher Diamond Company updated the shape in 2002 to have 74 facets.
