From Political Prisoner to Artist

Born in Bucharest, Romania, Prince Monyo Mihailescu-Nasturel Herescu, or simply Prince Monyo, was the last in the line of descendants of Romanian Voevods Kings. He spent 7 ½ years in solitary confinement as a political prisoner of the communists before he escaped to the United States as a political refugee in the 1960s. After living in Canada for a time, he finally settled in Florida in the 1980s. He was a self-taught sculptural artist and would open one of the largest bronze foundries in Florida. Prince Monyo became an internationally acclaimed artist and was known to drive around Palm Beach in one of his luxurious Rolls Royce sedans. The present lot is a ring featuring his family crest that Prince Monyo had custom-made for his wife, Princess Maria.
