Founded in 2006 by internationally recognized humanitarian Deogratias (Deo) Niyizonkiza, Village Health Works' mission is to provide quality, compassionate health care and education in a dignified environment while also addressing the root causes of illness, poverty, violence, and neglect. They operate in a rural area of southwestern Burundi, centered on the village of Kigutu, and serve a population of approximately 200,000 people, receiving patients mostly from three provinces—but also from as far away as Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
VHW focuses first on treating and preventing illness through primary health care and then integrating education, sustainable agriculture, and economic development programs in response to needs identified by their community.
