In 1993, Swatch decided to commemorate its 10th anniversary by creating ‘Tresor Magique’, a limited-edition watch equipped with an automatic movement and encased in platinum, as opposed to the mostly plastic-cased quartz watches the brand had been known for up until that point in time. The new model was revealed by the late Nicolas G. Hayek, co-founder and longtime CEO of the Swatch Group, at the New York Mercantile Exchange in front of a Wall Street crowd eager to discover the most luxurious and expensive model ever created by the brand. Collectors were not put off by the original price tag of $1,619, and retailers had to adopt the one-watch-per-customer policy to contain the shopping frenzy that followed the launch of the model.
