Bernice Goodspeed was an American anthropologist and silversmith that settled in Mexico City in 1930. She was drawn out there to complete her studies in pre-Columbian archeology. There, she met her husband, artist Carl Pappe. Together in 1938 they opened a studio gallery, which sold a combination of Carl’s original works and pre-Columbian artifacts curated by Bernice. From this endeavor, she was inspired to create her own pieces crafted from silver, drawing inspiration from Aztec and Mayan motifs.
