Brancusi created the first version of Le Cocq in 1924 from a single piece of wild cherry wood, carving a jutting, serrated shape that depicted the comb of a rooster. Revisiting the form, he created a second example in wood as well as an edition in bronze and even conceptualized a monumental version of the sculpture. For Brancusi, Le Cocq held a special significance, as the artist would often remark, “Le Coq c’est moi” (The Cock is me).
