The present work was likely made as a gift for Jasper Deeter, director of the Hedgerow Theater and close friend to Esherick. It is similar in form to the monumental deer sculptured entitled Darling that Esherick crafted and which remained in the woods on his studio property for about a decade.
Carved signature, date and inscription to front ‘To JAP 1940’ and to reverse ‘WE’.
