Originating in the reign of King Edward VII of England from 1901 to 1910, Edwardian jewelry is typified by refinement, elegance, and innovation. This jewelry reflects the transition from ornate Victorian works to the lighter, more delicate designs of the early 20th century. Edwardian jewelry signals the influence of an array of societal changes, technological advancements, and artistic movements. Renowned for its ethereal and feminine qualities, Edwardian jewelry features complicated metalwork, delicate filigree, plus diamonds and other precious gemstones in abundance. Platinum became the metal of choice given its durability and white color that did not tarnish. Jewelers created graceful lace-like designs and incorporated motifs such as bows, ribbons, garlands, and floral patterns. Designers of Edwardian jewelry also made frequent use of pearls, particularly natural pearls, to add sophisticated lustre to their arrangements.
