In the world of colored gemstones, ruby is king. Large untreated, natural stones can garner higher prices per carat than some colored diamonds. For eight centuries the finest examples of rubies have come from Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, and they are revered for their exceptional color and transparency. However, now there is a new ruby in town from Mozambique, and they rival even the finest Burmese rubies. In June of 2023, the 55.22 carat Estrela de FURA cushion-cut Mozambique ruby sold for a record breaking 34.8 million dollars at Sotheby’s, New York. This exceptional gem is now the most expensive colored stone ever sold at auction.
Rubies were discovered in Montepuez in the Cabo Delgado Province of Mozambique in 2009. The rubies mined in Montepuez yield intensely colored gems with very good transparency and color ranging from a purplish-red to red to slightly orangey-red. The chemical properties of the stones mined in this region fall into two categories. Some have more iron content, which yield darker tones and larger sizes. The rest of the deposits, including the origin of the Estrela de FURA, have less iron and a brighter long wave UV fluorescence akin to Burmese rubies.
Rubies are associated with many spiritual, romantic and symbolic properties and are thought to ward off evil and to provide protection of all kinds. Chinese noblemen used rubies to adorn their armor to provide them protection in battle and ensure victory. To possess a fine gem-quality ruby is a special thing indeed. The ruby on offer here is an excellent example of a Mozambique ruby; it has not been heat-treated, and is a highly saturated red hue with very good transparency and liveliness.
