Donald Claflin began his career working in interior decoration and textile design but, in 1957, he was introduced to David Webb and the world of jewelry design. He worked as David Webb’s assistant until 1965 when he took a position at Tiffany & Co. For nearly a decade, Claflin was an influential leader at the firm. He followed in the footsteps of Jean Schlumberger creating whimsical and imaginative pieces that incorporated a variety of materials and gemstones that were both visual striking and emotionally resonant.
The “LOVE” ring, created in collaboration with Tiffany & Co., is a prime example of Claflin's creativity. Crafted in 18k gold, the ring features the word “LOVE” formed in bold, capital letters around the exterior. From bold cutout letters as seen here to the word adorned in gemstones such as diamonds and colored gemstones like sapphires, emeralds, and rubies, Claflin’s clever play on words conveys an enduring symbol of love.
